  TC05 - Sharing Open Learning Objects

  In this module the teachers will learn Open Source initiatives, goals and concepts; they will learn how to develop, manage and use online school repositories of Learning Objects (LOs), how to create their own LOs and store them for common usage in online databases. Methods: collaboration, practice oriented learning coached by the tutor and by the instructor. Standards play a major role in open source initiatives, particularly standards governing delivery. It is important that these standards are simplified for effective use and that they do not present a barrier to the uptake of Open Source concepts.

  Week 2: Sharing educational resources - free/open-source software movement and Open Educational Resources
  

  The idea of sharing educational resources through the Web is becoming more and more popular. But how can this be if "all rights are reserved". The Open content model, and the related copyleft licenses, are the solution. You will start by reading how the Open Content model has developed from similar sharing models in the software world. In addition, you will learn about the Creative Commons, an example of copyleft licences, that allow Net users to freely share resources, by specifying restrictions for reuse or modifications.

  Weeks 3 - 4:The SCORM and LOM standards - producing reusable, searchable and interoperable Learning Objects

  This section deals with standards. Specifically, it introduces the SCORM standard for Learning Objects, and the IEEE-LOM for metadata. The technical language used need not panic anyone: it has been used just to give an idea of the mechanisms associated with standardization. The materials proposed in the following sections have been devised to allow any teacher of any subject to make their own LO SCORM compliant by means of a few very simple steps.

    In order to make a Learning Object reusable and searchable, it is important to describe it with "meta information", called Metadata. In the next Learning Object/Book, you will learn the basic concepts of an example of a metadata model: the IEEE Learning Object Metadata model. You will learn how to use FreeLOMs to associate metadata to a Learning Object next week.
